The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ran a special scheme to attract foreign currency into India. Banks and companies brought in a total of USD 143.6 billion (roughly ₹12 lakh crore) through three types of foreign currency channels. The scheme for one channel — FCNR(B) deposits — closed on August 31, 2026, while the other two channels remain open till December 31, 2026.
When India receives large amounts of foreign currency, it helps stabilise the Indian rupee against the US dollar. A stable rupee can help keep the cost of imported goods — like fuel, electronics, and medicines — from rising too sharply. This kind of RBI action is typically taken to manage pressure on India's foreign exchange reserves.
