What happened

SEBI has introduced a new tool called the Credit Risk-o-Meter. This tool will show investors how risky the debt securities inside a mutual fund are. It works as an extra disclosure — meaning fund houses must now display this information in addition to what they already share.

Why it matters

Debt mutual funds invest your money in bonds and loans given to companies or governments. Some of these carry higher risk of the borrower not repaying. The Credit Risk-o-Meter helps ordinary investors see this risk clearly before putting in money.

What to check

  • →Check the Credit Risk-o-Meter rating on any debt mutual fund you currently hold or plan to invest in.
  • →Look at whether your existing debt fund's risk level has changed after this disclosure is added.
  • →Find out from your fund house or broker when this meter will appear on your fund's factsheet or app.
  • →Ask your mutual fund platform or distributor to explain what each level on the meter means.
  • →Consider comparing the Credit Risk-o-Meter levels across similar funds before making any new investment decision.

This is general information, not financial advice. Check your own position with your lender or an adviser.
