What happened

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the merger of all Indian branches of Emirates NBD Bank into RBL Bank. From December 1, 2026, Emirates NBD's Indian branches will operate as RBL Bank branches. The RBI used its powers under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to approve this merger.

Why it matters

When two banks merge, customers of the smaller or absorbed bank automatically become customers of the new bank. This affects accounts, deposits, loans, and any other banking relationships held with the merging bank. RBI oversees such mergers to protect depositors and ensure a smooth transition.
