RBI has issued new rules requiring commercial banks to conduct real-time internal audits.

The Reserve Bank of India issued new official directions on July 31, 2026, governing how commercial banks must conduct concurrent audits. Concurrent audit means banks must check their own transactions quickly and regularly, not just at year-end. These rules apply to all major commercial banks including the State Bank of India, but not Small Finance Banks or Payments Banks.
Concurrent audit — meaning an independent check that happens at nearly the same time as a bank transaction — is designed to catch errors and fraud early. The RBI wants stronger oversight inside banks to protect depositors and maintain financial stability. Tighter audit rules generally reduce the risk of banking fraud reaching customers.
