What happened

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released August 2026 data on bank lending and deposit rates. Interest rates on new bank loans dropped very slightly, while the one-year MCLR — the benchmark rate banks use to set most loan interest rates — rose from 8.60% to 8.70%. Interest rates offered on new fixed deposits (FDs) also fell slightly, from 5.99% to 5.90%.

Why it matters

These numbers affect how much interest you pay on home loans, car loans, and personal loans. They also affect how much your bank FD earns. When MCLR rises, banks often increase loan EMIs (monthly instalments) for borrowers on floating-rate loans. When FD rates fall, your savings earn less.

What to check

  • →Check if your home loan or personal loan is linked to MCLR — a rise in MCLR can increase your EMI or loan tenure
  • →Look at your bank's current FD rates before renewing or opening a new fixed deposit
  • →Find out whether your loan is on a fixed rate or floating rate — floating-rate loans change when MCLR changes
  • →Ask your bank when they will pass on the MCLR change to your loan account, as banks reset rates at specific intervals
  • →Consider comparing FD rates across different banks if you are planning to invest in a term deposit soon
