The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) held a 2-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction on August 25, 2026. In a VRRR auction, the RBI temporarily borrows money from banks to manage how much cash is flowing in the financial system. Banks offered ₹98,516 crore and the RBI accepted the entire amount at an interest rate of 5.24%.
When the RBI absorbs cash from banks through these auctions, it is trying to prevent too much money from circulating in the economy, which can push up prices. This is a routine liquidity management tool used by the RBI. It does not directly change loan or deposit rates, but it signals how the RBI is managing overall money supply.
