What happened

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has told all banks to improve how they detect and report fake currency notes. Banks must train all cash-handling staff by October 31, 2026. Branches near India's international borders must be trained earlier, by September 15, 2026, and must also have note-checking machines installed.

Why it matters

RBI found that some banks were not doing enough to catch fake notes. Fake currency in circulation harms ordinary people who unknowingly receive counterfeit notes and cannot get any value from them. Stronger bank processes mean fake notes are caught at the counter before they reach you.

What to check

  • →Check whether your bank branch has a note-sorting or note-authentication machine at the cash counter
  • →Ask your bank teller to check any large or suspicious notes you receive before you leave the branch
  • →Find out what your bank's process is if you deposit a note that turns out to be fake — you will not get its value back
  • →Look at the RBI website for a guide on security features of genuine Indian banknotes so you can spot fakes yourself
  • →Consider requesting a receipt or acknowledgement if a bank ever impounds a note you have deposited
