What happened

SEBI has successfully launched a pilot project called 'Demat 2.0' for tokenised corporate bonds. Tokenisation means converting a traditional bond — a loan you give to a company in exchange for regular interest — into a digital token on a blockchain (a secure, shared digital record). The pilot is in its early testing stage and full details of eligibility and rollout are not yet available from this source.

Why it matters

India's bond market has historically been difficult for ordinary investors to access. Tokenisation could make it easier and cheaper to buy smaller pieces of bonds. SEBI is testing this technology to see if it can modernise how corporate bonds are issued and traded in India.

What to check

  • →Check SEBI's official website (sebi.gov.in) for updates on when this pilot opens to retail investors
  • →Find out whether your existing Demat account provider plans to support tokenised bonds under this pilot
  • →Ask your broker or investment platform what 'tokenised bonds' will mean for minimum investment amounts
  • →Look at how this differs from regular bonds held in your current Demat account before making any decisions
  • →Consider following SEBI circulars for confirmed eligibility criteria, tax treatment, and investor protections before this goes live
