What happened

The Reserve Bank of India's rate-setting committee met from August 3 to 5, 2026 and decided unanimously to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25%. The repo rate is the interest rate at which RBI lends money to banks — it directly influences what banks charge you for loans and what they pay you on deposits. The committee also continued its 'neutral stance', meaning it is neither actively trying to reduce nor increase rates right now.

Why it matters

When the repo rate stays the same, your home loan, car loan, and personal loan EMIs are unlikely to change in the near term. Banks use this rate as a base to decide their own lending rates. The RBI cited global uncertainty, ongoing conflict in West Asia, and persistent inflation concerns as reasons for holding rates steady rather than cutting or raising them.

What to check

  • →Check your home loan agreement to see if your loan is on a floating rate — if yes, your EMI is linked to repo rate movements
  • →Look at your fixed deposit renewal notices — FD interest rates may stay stable for now, which could affect how much you earn on savings
  • →Find out from your bank whether your loan is linked to the repo rate directly (called RLLR or EBLR loans) or to older benchmark systems
  • →Consider whether this is a good time to lock in a fixed deposit rate before any future rate changes
  • →Ask your bank or lender how soon any future repo rate changes would reflect in your EMI or savings account interest
