What happened

Seven state governments — Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, and Rajasthan — are auctioning government bonds worth ₹15,300 crore on August 11, 2026. These bonds, called State Government Securities or SGS, are loans that state governments take from the public. Individual investors can also participate through RBI's Retail Direct portal.

Why it matters

State government bonds are considered very safe investments because they are backed by state governments. RBI allows ordinary citizens to buy these bonds directly, without going through a bank or broker. This gives regular investors access to a secure, fixed-income option that was earlier available mainly to large institutions.

What to check

  • →Check the RBI Retail Direct portal at rbiretaildirect.org.in if you want to invest in these bonds as an individual
  • →Look at the interest rates offered — they range from roughly 7.38% to 7.81% per year depending on the bond
  • →Find out the tenor, meaning how many years your money will be locked in — options here range from 9 to 30 years
  • →Consider whether a long lock-in period of up to 30 years suits your personal financial timeline before exploring this
  • →Ask your bank or check RBI's website for the non-competitive bidding form if you face any difficulty using the online portal
