What happened

The Reserve Bank of India released its weekly statistical data for the week ending July 17, 2026. India's total foreign exchange reserves stand at ₹65,11,163 crore (about US$ 676 billion). Bank deposits across all scheduled commercial banks total ₹2,62,84,574 crore as of July 15, 2026.

Why it matters

Foreign exchange reserves — meaning the dollars and gold India holds to protect the rupee — affect how stable the rupee stays against other currencies. Bank deposit and credit growth numbers show how actively people are saving and borrowing, which reflects the overall health of the economy.

What to check

  • →Check if your bank deposits are in time deposits (fixed deposits) or demand deposits (savings accounts), as time deposits grew while demand deposits fell recently.
  • →Look at how rupee stability may affect prices of imported goods like electronics or fuel if reserves change significantly over coming weeks.
  • →Find out if your bank's overall lending growth is healthy, as slower credit growth can sometimes signal tighter loan approvals.
  • →Consider that gold held by RBI fell in value this week — this is separate from personal gold you may own, but reflects global gold price movements.
  • →Ask your bank branch about current fixed deposit interest rates, as deposit trends can sometimes influence the rates banks offer.
