What happened

SEBI issued an emergency interim order against parties who allegedly manipulated trades during the Call Auction Session (CAS) on the day SENSEX options contracts expired at BSE on August 13, 2026. A Call Auction Session is a special window at the start or end of trading where orders are collected and matched at once, rather than continuously. SEBI acted without first hearing the accused — called an 'ex-parte' order — meaning the threat was considered serious enough to act immediately.

Why it matters

Manipulation during expiry sessions can distort the final settlement prices of derivatives contracts, which are financial products whose value is linked to an index like SENSEX. This can cause unfair losses for ordinary investors whose positions get settled at artificial prices. SEBI regularly monitors such sessions to protect market integrity.
