What happened

RBI has updated rules for Rural Co-operative Banks (RCBs) — small community-based banks — on how they must handle unauthorised or fraudulent online banking transactions. These new rules clarify when a customer is protected from financial loss and when the bank must compensate them. The rules take effect for all electronic transactions from January 1, 2027.

Why it matters

Many rural and semi-urban Indians use co-operative banks for their savings and daily banking. Until now, rules on who bears the loss in online fraud cases were less clear for these banks. RBI is aligning RCB rules more closely with protections already available to customers of larger commercial banks.

What to check

  • →Check if your bank is a Rural Co-operative Bank — look at your passbook or ask your branch
  • →Find out what your bank currently does when you report an unauthorised transaction in your account
  • →Look at whether your bank has a written policy on zero-liability or limited-liability for online fraud
  • →Consider how quickly you report suspicious transactions — timing often affects how much protection you receive
  • →Ask your bank how to register a complaint if you notice a transaction you did not make
