What happened
The RBI held its third annual conference of Internal Ombudsmen on July 13, 2026, in Mumbai. An Internal Ombudsman is an independent complaint reviewer inside a bank or financial company. The RBI asked these officers to resolve customer complaints more fairly, faster, and without customers needing to approach the RBI Ombudsman.
Why it matters
Many Indian bank customers struggle to get complaints resolved by their bank. The RBI wants banks to fix problems internally before customers are forced to escalate outside. A stronger Internal Ombudsman system means customers may get faster redress without going through lengthy external processes.
What to check
- →Check if your bank or NBFC has an Internal Ombudsman and how to reach them.
- →Find out the steps for escalating a complaint inside your bank before approaching the RBI Ombudsman.
- →Look at the RBI Ombudsman portal (rbi.org.in) if your bank has not resolved your complaint satisfactorily.
- →Ask your bank's customer service for the name and contact of their Principal Nodal Officer for complaints.
- →Consider keeping a written record of all complaints you raise with your bank, including dates and responses.
