What happened

The Union Territory of Ladakh has created five new districts: Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass. The RBI has assigned State Bank of India as the Lead Bank for all five new districts. This follows a Ladakh administration gazette notification dated April 27, 2026.

Why it matters

Every district in India has a Lead Bank. The Lead Bank coordinates banking services, credit availability, and government scheme delivery in that district. Assigning a Lead Bank to new districts means residents there can now access structured banking outreach and financial inclusion programs.

What to check

  • →Check if you live in any of the five new Ladakh districts: Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar, or Drass.
  • →Find out if your nearest SBI branch will now handle government loan schemes and banking camps in your district.
  • →Ask your local SBI branch about financial inclusion programs, such as subsidised loans or savings schemes, now available in your new district.
  • →Look at whether government benefit disbursements linked to your district code may be updated due to the new district working codes.
  • →Consider checking your official address documents if your village has moved into a newly named district, as district name matters for KYC and government applications.
