What happened
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has updated rules for All India Financial Institutions (AIFIs) — large lenders like NABARD, NHB, EXIM Bank, and SIDBI — on how they must behave when recovering loan dues. The new rules clearly define who counts as a recovery agency and a recovery agent, meaning the people institutions hire to collect overdue loan payments. These changes come into effect from January 1, 2027.
Why it matters
Many borrowers have faced harassment or unfair pressure from loan recovery agents in the past. RBI is tightening the rules to make sure these institutions follow proper, respectful conduct when chasing overdue payments. This gives borrowers clearer protections if they ever fall behind on a loan from one of these large institutions.
What to check
- →Check if your loan is from an AIFI such as NABARD, NHB, EXIM Bank, or SIDBI — these new rules apply specifically to them.
- →Find out what your rights are if a recovery agent contacts you — RBI rules require institutions to follow a code of conduct.
- →Ask your lender for the name and details of any recovery agency they use, as institutions are now required to maintain clear records.
- →Look at your loan agreement to understand what counts as a 'default' — the point at which a recovery agent can be sent.
- →Consider keeping records of any communication from recovery agents, including date, time, and what was said, in case you need to raise a complaint.
